2 Day Olympic National Park Itinerary
If you’re looking for one of the most diverse national parks in the United States, Olympic National Park delivers an experience that feels like visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In just two days, you can walk along rugged Pacific beaches, wander through ancient rainforests, and stand above it all in the alpine mountains.
This 2 day Olympic National Park itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want to see the park’s most iconic highlights while keeping the route logical and easy to follow. On top of that I’ve added a 3rd day where you can explore even more on your way back to the airport.
Overview
I’ve explored Olympic National Park multiple times and as gargantuan as it is, if you know where to go, where to stay and how to organize your trip, you can see and get a lot done. This itinerary focuses on three main regions: the coastline, the rainforest, and the mountains. You’ll start along the Pacific coast, move into the lush interior, and finish with sweeping alpine views before returning.
- Start point: Seattle
- End point: Seattle
- Where to Stay: Port Angeles (right by Olympic National Park)
- Best for: First-time visitors, weekend trips, and scenic variety
Day 1: Pacific Coast and Hoh Rain Forest

Day one is all about experiencing Olympic’s wild and untamed side. You’ll begin by heading west toward the Pacific Ocean, where the landscape opens up into dramatic coastal scenery shaped by waves, wind, and time. After soaking in the coastline, you’ll transition inland into one of the most unique ecosystems in North America, the rainforest. The contrast between these two environments in a single day is what makes Olympic National Park so unforgettable.

Travel Itinerary in Seconds

Start early and make your way to Rialto Beach. This stretch of coastline is known for its massive driftwood, towering sea stacks, and powerful surf. Walking along the shoreline feels raw and immersive, especially as you approach the famous Hole-in-the-Wall rock formation.
From here, continue your drive inland to the Hoh Rain Forest. The atmosphere shifts completely, towering trees draped in moss, soft forest floors, and a quiet stillness that makes it feel almost otherworldly. It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down and take it all in.
Things to do on Day 1:
- Walk along Rialto Beach and explore the rugged shoreline
- Hike to Hole-in-the-Wall (check tide charts before going)
- Drive through scenic stretches of the western Olympic Peninsula
- Explore the Hall of Mosses Trail in the Hoh Rain Forest
- Walk the Spruce Nature Trail for river views and added solitude
- Enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by old-growth forest
- Stay overnight near Forks or return toward Port Angeles depending on your pace.
Day 2: Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent

Day two shifts the focus to Olympic’s mountainous terrain and tranquil lakes. You’ll start the day climbing into the alpine zone, where wide-open views stretch across the Olympic Mountains. Later, you’ll descend back into a calmer setting at one of the park’s most beautiful lakes.
Begin your morning by heading up to Hurricane Ridge. The road winds steadily upward, eventually revealing sweeping views of jagged peaks and rolling ridgelines. On a clear day, the visibility here is incredible, making it one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the park.
After taking in the mountain scenery, make your way to Lake Crescent. The deep blue water, framed by forested slopes, offers a completely different pace compared to the rugged coast and high elevations. It’s the perfect place to relax, stretch your legs, and enjoy a quieter side of the park.
Things to do on Day 2:
- Drive up to Hurricane Ridge for panoramic mountain views
- Take a short hike along Hurricane Hill or nearby trails
- Stop at scenic overlooks for photos and wildlife spotting
- Visit Lake Crescent and walk along the shoreline
- Be sure to do the short but beautiful Devils Punchbowl trail
- Hike to Marymere Falls through old-growth forest
- Relax by the lake or rent a kayak for a peaceful experience
- By the end of the day, you’ll have experienced three completely different ecosystems, all within a relatively short distance.
Day 3 (Optional): Stop on the Way Back to Seattle

If you’re heading back toward Seattle and have extra time, consider adding a third day to explore one more unique area just outside the park. This is a great way to break up the drive and extend your trip without going far out of your way.
A popular stop is Deception Pass State Park, known for its dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and iconic bridge views. It’s a quick but rewarding stop that adds a completely different coastal perspective compared to Olympic.
Alternatively, you can visit Bainbridge Island for a more relaxed experience. A short ferry ride offers beautiful views of Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline, along with small-town charm, shops, and waterfront walking paths.
Things to do on Optional Day 3:
- Stop at Deception Pass for scenic viewpoints and short hikes
- Walk across the Deception Pass Bridge for dramatic views
- Take the ferry to Bainbridge Island for a relaxing detour
- Explore local shops, cafes, and waterfront areas
- Enjoy views of Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline (and other things to do in Seattle)
Best Times to Go
The best time to visit Olympic National Park is from late spring through early fall. Summer offers the most reliable weather and full access to higher elevations like Hurricane Ridge. Early fall can be especially rewarding with fewer crowds and a quieter atmosphere. Rain is common in the rainforest year-round, so it’s always a good idea to come prepared.
